Gold and Blood: How Sudan’s War Exposes a New Imperialism

The tragedy unfolding in Sudan is not just an internal civil war — it’s a brutal proxy conflict, fuelled by foreign interests and greed. At its heart lies a deadly struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF — a militia accused of mass atrocities and ethnic cleansing.

But behind the RSF’s staying power stands a powerful patron: the United Arab Emirates. Multiple investigations by Amnesty International, The Guardian, and the Atlantic Council link the UAE to covert arms supplies, drone shipments, and logistical support — often channelled through Chad and Libya. The motive? Gold, power, and geopolitical dominance.

Sudan’s gold is bleeding through Dubai’s markets — financing warlords while ordinary Sudanese starve. The same gold that glitters in Gulf skyscrapers is soaked in the blood of Darfur’s victims.

The Sudanese government has even taken the UAE to the International Court of Justice, accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention. Although the case was dismissed on technical grounds, the evidence of external interference remains undeniable.

This is not merely a Sudanese tragedy — it’s a mirror of a new imperialism emerging across Africa, where wealth, influence, and strategic ports matter more than human lives.

The world must ask: how long will we allow proxy powers to ignite wars for profit — while the people of Sudan, Yemen, Gaza, and beyond pay the price?
